Florida Alpha Endowment Campaign
(Usually estate & income tax-deductible)

Endowment gifts are future gifts, usually by will or trust bestowed upon Florida Alpha. To endow literally means “to furnish with funds.” Florida Alpha Endowment Campaign gifts may include, but are not limited to, appreciated real estate and stocks, bonds, beneficial interest in life insurance policies, foundation grants or matching gifts. If you would like to explore the various possibilities of leaving funds in your estate to Florida Alpha, please contact the chairman of our Florida Alpha Educational Foundation, Jeffrey P. Wilson at 800-522-5133 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . These future gifts count toward all gifting levels at a 10:1 ratio as opposed to a direct cash gift. An example of this would be a $5,000 cash gift would achieve the same gifting level as a $50,000 future bequest from a brother’s will, trust or other vehicle. Please contact us for more information.

We encourage you to also support the National Fraternity in any way you can. Visit www.sigepfoundation.org or www.sigep.org to discover the many ways you can keep our National Fraternity strong.

Scholarship Process
For the Florida Alpha Chapter - University of Florida

The following procedure will govern the process of awarding Florida Alpha Alumni Scholarships by the Florida Alpha Educational Foundation from the Florida Alpha Scholarship Funds (both Gainesville and Richmond) and the Added Dimensions Funds (both Gainesville and Richmond).

Purpose
The purpose of the scholarships is to aid Florida Alpha chapter brothers in the continuation of their education at the University of Florida and in their participation in the Florida Alpha chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

Award Basis
The scholarships shall be given to the brothers whom the Educational Foundation deems to be the brothers having contributed most to the growth and fraternal spirit of Sigma Phi Epsilon at the University of Florida and have a need for financial assistance.

Selection Procedure
By October 1st the Active Chapter President will confirm with the Educational Foundation that funds are available for FL Alpha Alumni Scholarships and he will inform the Active Chapter members they may apply for scholarships.

By November 1st, applicants for these scholarships will submit their applications via the Active Chapter President to the Educational Foundation. Selection of winners will be made by a Committee of at least three Educational Foundation Board members appointed by the Foundation President. The Active Chapter President will serve as a non-voting member of the Committee.

Eligibility
An applicant for a scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be an initiate, affiliate or pledge of the Florida Alpha chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon and in good standing.
  2. Plan to return to Florida Alpha and live in the house (or out of the house provided the house is fully occupied) for the full academic year or until he graduates, whichever is earliest.
  3. The Active Chapter President and VP of Finance are not eligible.

Scholarship Amount
The number of scholarships and the individual scholarship dollar amount will be determined each year by the Educational Foundation.

Payment
The scholarship payment shall be paid to the UF for benefit of the recipient as payment toward room rent in the chapter house. The payment shall be paid no later than December 1st of the year in which it is awarded and it will be credited toward the upcoming spring semester.

In the event a recipient shall fail to return to the chapter for the spring semester, the Educational Foundation shall have the authority to award the scholarship to a member of its choosing. The new recipient shall be named as soon as possible but no later than February 1st.

Amendments
The Florida Alpha Educational Foundation reserves the right to amend these procedures at any time.

Currently the AVC’s daily financial responsibilities are managed by a third party consultant and that will continue to the case in the future. Balanced Man Steward:

The Balanced Man Steward serves largely as the membership education advisor, overseeing the implementation and proficiency of Sound Mind and Sound Body Activities. Stewards are responsible for developing a written program that addresses the needs of members from freshmen to senior year. It is imperative the membership development program is started on a strong foot for the future. Developing balanced men with a dedication to Sound Mind and Sound Body is at the heart of this role.

Responsibilities

  • Discuss the Balanced Man Ideal and its philosophical roots intelligently
  • Understand the belief system and formations of Sound Mind and Sound Body
  • Articulate the chapter intangibles that relate as a function of Sound Mind and Sound Body
  • Know how the Balanced Man Program is properly implemented
  • Facilitate the BMP as a way to impact the continuously changing needs of the undergraduate

Role

  • Meet regularly to review challenge programs with the Vice President of Member Development and Challenge coordinators
  • Ensure that the Sound Mind and Sound Body Programming is properly implemented
  • Ensure BMP trackers are used following Lexicon format
  • Ensure that new members are fully participatory, with all rights and responsibilities
  • Ensure that the Ritual specific to the “Journey of Brotherhood” is used by the chapter
  • Ensure that all members’ expectations are being enforced and standards upheld

Faculty Advisor:

The Faculty Advisor is essential to the development of the Balanced Man. The Faculty Advisor provides the chapter members with the continuity and help they need to attain academic goals. He or she also serves as a liaison between the Greek organization and the college/university.

Suggested responsibilities of a Faculty Advisor are to:

  • Be accessible to the membership. This is very important because you will probably be the first person to know of academic problems.
  • Conduct at least one workshop each year on how to improve academic performance (a study skills workshop).
  • Support the scholarship chairman in planning and executing scholarship programs. These programs should include other faculty and administrators who can help members achieve their academic goals.
  • Help the scholarship chairman maintain a list of referrals for members who are having academic problems (These should include the study skills center for learning disabilities, etc.).
  • Create a plan with the scholarship chairman to get other faculty members involved with the chapter as guest speakers on their field of expertise.
  • Have regular communications with the chapter counselor.
  • Attend one scholarship committee meeting a month and chapter meetings when possible.
  • Review new member programs to ensure that scholastic performance is encouraged and not hindered by the development program.
  • Help the scholarship committee plan a yearly faculty reception.
  • Stress the importance of quiet hours in the chapter facility. The scholarship chairman should monitor them and take appropriate steps to discipline members who violate them.

The impact of a faculty member engaged in a student's learning is immeasurable. Remember your undergraduate days and how important it was to you when a faculty member took an interest in you. Since a great deal of learning takes place outside of the classroom, it is important for the faculty to become involved in the extracurricular life of the student.

Mentor:

Florida Alpha currently operates a Mentorship program for our undergraduate brothers. This program has been developed by a national committee and is in need of mentors to participate. Mentee’s are screened before being paired with a Mentor and the Mentee is required to submit a list of Goals and Objectives for the year that the Mentor and Mentee can discuss. The level of participation is driven by both the Mentor and Mentee and there is a wrap up at the end of the year. Class/Decade Reunion Chairman:

In addition to our Homecoming and local events Florida Alpha realizes that each class or decade has a unique connection given their shared experiences at the University of Florida and given the unique circumstances of each generation. Several Class or Decade reunions have been organized and have been a huge success, we would like to provide that opportunity for each decade and need a volunteers to take the initiative.
